Motion Sensor Activated Air Conditioning Systems

The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) presented a design that uses sensors placed on aluminum rods hanging from the ceiling to indicate if the room is occupied. If there’s someone in the room, the sensors power up the HVAC system.

Thermally Driven Chillers

Chromasun, an Australian-based HVAC manufacturer recently presented a green, cost-effective HVAC alternative. This system uses solar panels and natural gas to heat or cool a room, making it a perfect choice for any home. This system costs less, is more efficient and more reliable than their electrical counterparts.

3D Printed HVAC Units

While this might seem like something straight out of Science Fiction, 3D printing has come a long way since its humble beginnings only a few decades ago. And 3D printed HVAC systems do not seem that far-fetched anymore. A company called Emerging Objects patented a 3D printed building material called Cool Brick. It cools a room by drawing moisture from it. While this isn’t fit for high temperatures, it is a sure step towards a fully-functional 3D printed HVAC system.

If you ever used a computer or a laptop for several hours, you know how hot it can get. Lawrence Orsini, the founder of Project Exergy, saw the potential of using this excess heat to power a heating system. Harnessing energy from a product you are already using is the perfect way to make your home eco-friendly. The concept is still being developed, but is sure to revolutionize the heating industry.

Air Conditioning Systems Powered by Ice

Another interesting concept comes from a California-based company. Thier product called the Ice Bear freezes water in a tank overnight and uses that ice to cool a building during the day. However, the design still cannot provide more than six hours of cooling and has to be backed by a traditional cooling system. Although this technology still needs a lot of improvement, the initial results show a lot of promise.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are already extremely efficient devices. But they can be made even better! Geothermal energy is another huge potential that hasn’t been completely harnessed yet. Although geothermal heat pumps have been around since the 1940’s, the concept caught on only recently. In fact, Iceland uses geothermal energy almost exclusively. Geothermal heat pumps work by collecting Earth’s energy through underground pipes. When you need to cool your home, the process is reverse as the pipes extract the heat from your home into the ground.
