The presentation of iPhone X, equipped with FaceID, spurred a discussion – is this method of user identification really that reliable? Apart from that, there were some new suggestions about more advanced technologies. A list of such methods, like fingerprint or iris scanning, has something completely innovative now – the researchers from the University of Buffalo (New York) proposed to identify users by shapes of their hearts.
As you may know, every heart has a unique shape which doesn’t change in time excluding cases of serious diseases. Therefore, American scientists developed a biometric system which is equipped with the so-called Doppler radar – it can determine the shape, size and rhythm of the human heart within 8 seconds. After that, the system can continuously monitor the heart, which makes this technology much more reliable compared to one-time identification (for example, fingerprinting).
According to the researchers, the scanner is totally harmless to the human body – the device is safe as well as gadgets with Wi-Fi modules, and, in addition, has lower signal strength. Plus, the scanner doesn’t consume much power.
Most importantly, during development tests, the system showed recognition accuracy of 98.6%. It means that the technology might be easily featured in future mobile devices. For instance, it can be built into the computer keyboard or smartphone to identify the owner.
