A lot of modern smartphones are equipped with wireless charging. The main standard of this type of charging is Qi, it’s been on Android smartphones for a long time and appeared on iPhone 8 and iPhone X. But this standard requires close contact of the device and the charging platform, so this isn’t exactly wireless. The company Pi plans to change this situation.
Pi demonstrated its new gadget which is capable of charging mobile devices wirelessly at a distance of 30cm. The gadget called Pi Charge uses magnetic induction, just like the Qi standard. However, it has an additional technology that creates magnetic field in the form of a ray. Then, this ray goes to the place where the smartphone lies. This allows users to charge smartphones remotely with the maximum distance of 30cm.
During the demonstration of Pi Charge, company’s employees managed to simultaneously “connect” five devices: four smartphones and one iPad. All devices were cased in some thick covers but they didn’t need any wires or special stands. The only catch is that we didn’t learn the charging speed – it all apparently depends on the distance between Pi Charge and the mobile device. The company also didn’t say anything about the price of the device but promised that it would be cheaper than $200. Pi Charge should go on sale in 2018.
