When Apple had introduced the first iPad in 2010, tablets became popular immediately. Many people waited in long lines to buy an iPad while other companies started making tablets on Android. 7 years later, the situation has changed. Now, even smartphones have big screens and many brands just stopped making new tablets or updating the old ones.
As a result, this segment is losing demand and popularity. In fact, this tendency started 2-3 years ago and it still relevant now. The recent IDC report confirms this disappointing situation. In Q1 2017, tablet shipments dropped by 8.5% compared to last year. This is the tenth consecutive quarter when there is no growth.
Overall, 36.2 million tablets were shipped in Q1 2017. Among all the brands, Apple retains the leadership on the market with 24.6% share. Still, this is 13% less than in 2016. The second place belongs to Samsung (16.5%). The top 5 also includes Huawei, Amazon and Lenovo. Interestingly, only Huawei managed to increase its shipments – by 31.7%.
