Smartphones with frameless displays are still somewhat a mystery for all customers. They always attract attention and intrigue customers all around the world. But in reality, they aren’t very widespread. Companies usually make limited batches and don’t get involved into mass production. Hence, a question – will there ever be a mass-produced frameless smartphone? Engineers at Xiaomi think that there will be. In autumn, the company introduced one of the best powerful mobile devices a frameless Long Standby phablet, called Xiaomi Mi Mix. Let’s take a quick look at it in this review.

Design is definitely the first thing that catches your eye. The body is made of ceramics, a “noble” and, most importantly, scratch-resistant material. Unfortunately, ceramics doesn’t cope very well with shock absorbency, so keep that in mind. The 6.4-inch display is truly remarkable – it looks almost like it’s levitating. Frameless design doesn’t cause any inconveniences.
Now, let’s turn to software. Mi Mix runs on Android 6.0 with the MIUI skin. MIUI, by the way, is a very functional and well-balanced skin. Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, the smartphone also has 6 GB RAM and 128 (or 256) GB of internal memory. As a result, the productivity and speed of Mi Mix exceeds all expectations.
Camera isn’t the strongest suit of this smartphone. 16 MP rear camera – it sounds great but there’s no optical stabilization or laser autofocus, which you would expect on the phone like that. The quality is actually impressive but you would want more. Plus, the frontal camera has only 5 MP.
But let’s focus on advantages. The sound of Mi Mix is well-balanced, clear and quite powerful. Also, such a big phone requires a bigger battery, so Mi Mix is powered by a 4400mAh one. That will be enough for a day of active usage or 2-3 days of moderate usage.
All in all, Xiaomi Mi Mix is a serious device with eye-catching design and powerful software. Answering our question in the beginning, we can say that it won’t be the first mass-produced frameless smartphone, as the batches are strictly limited and it’s hard to get your hands on this phone unless you’re in China. But still, Mi Mix will definitely appeal to the audience.
